Calls for Independent Review of US Beef Import Decision
Federal Member for Lyne, Alison Penfold, has called for an independent review of the Albanese Labor Government's recent decision to allow US beef, born and raised in Canada and Mexico, to be imported into Australia. Alison expressed concern over the potential risks to Australia's biosecurity and the impact on local beef producers.
"Our biosecurity system is designed to protect our island nation from diseases like BSE, which could decimate our industry," said Alison. "The Government's decision raises more questions than answers, and that's why we are calling for an independent review to examine the science behind this move."
During Question Time, Alison challenged the Minister on the import protocols and inspection requirements, but received evasive responses. "The Minister's defensiveness and refusal to provide clear answers on the protocol are concerning. We need transparency and assurance that our biosecurity standards are being upheld."
Alison emphasized the importance of protecting the interests of local beef producers, who could face significant losses if a major disease incursion were to occur. "Our biosecurity is non-negotiable, and I will continue to advocate for the safety and prosperity of our rural communities and the hardworking farmers who sustain them."
