Lyne MP welcomes support for young athletes through champions’ program
Federal Member for Lyne Alison Penfold has welcomed the latest round of support for 11 young athletes across the electorate through the Australian Government's Local Sporting Champions program.
The program provides financial assistance to help young competitors, coaches and officials participate in State, national and international sporting championships.
Ms Penfold said the grants played an important role in helping regional families manage the costs associated with sporting participation and representative competition.
She said the region was fortunate to have so many talented young people who were striving to achieve their goals in sport, often travelling significant distances to compete and represent their communities.
“For regional families, the costs of travel, accommodation and participation can quickly add up,” Ms Penfold said.
“These grants provide practical assistance and help ensure geography is not a barrier to opportunity.
“I congratulate all local recipients and wish them every success as they continue their sporting journeys.”
Successful recipients and their competitions include:
Blake Bohannon, Herons Creek: 2026 MXGP State challenge
Cody Field, Mindaribba: Australian Schools and Junior Rugby Union Championship
Cooper Parkes, Frazers Creek: Australian Enduro Championship
Emma Webb, Hinton: Olympic test event for Wing Foiling
Eoin Watkins, Harrington: Australia All Schools Hockey Australia Championship
Gracie Clements, Vacy: 2026 Australian Interschool Championships
Lincoln Greentree, Woodville: 2026 Australian Cross Country Championships
Lydia Proctor, Butterwick: 2026 Horsland Australian Interschool championships
Morgan Lange, West Haven: Australian National Jiu Jitsu Championship
Omar Moltzen, Boomerang Beach: Australian Junior Surfing Titles
Piper Bamford, Forster: School Sport Australia Games 2026 Melbourne
Ms Penfold said the program recognised not only sporting excellence but also the dedication and commitment shown by young Australians pursuing their ambitions.
“These young athletes are great ambassadors for our region,” she said.
“Their achievements reflect countless hours of training, commitment and support from families, coaches and volunteers.
“I encourage eligible young people from Lyne to consider applying in future rounds so they can take advantage of the support available through these valuable programs.”
