Fuel Crisis and “No Fuel Here” Initiative
Right now, across our region, families, farmers and small businesses are being hit hard by fuel shortages and skyrocketing prices. I am hearing it every day from people who rely on fuel not as a luxury, but as a necessity to get to work, run their businesses and keep food on the table.
That is why The Nationals have launched nofuelhere.com.au, a practical tool to map fuel shortages in real time and make it impossible for the Government to ignore what is happening on the ground. This is about transparency and accountability.
But a website alone will not fix this crisis.
I am calling on Chris Bowen to use the full powers available to him under existing legislation. Parliament is sitting this week. The Government has the authority to act. The question is why they are not using it.
I am also calling on the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission to urgently expand its investigation into anti-competitive behaviour in the fuel market. There are credible concerns around the diesel spot market, including hedging and hoarding practices that may be distorting prices.
Normally, the spot price sits within a few cents of contract prices. What we are seeing now is completely outside that norm. That raises serious questions.
Regional Australians cannot simply absorb these costs. Fuel underpins everything in our economy, from agriculture to freight to everyday commuting.
We need answers, and we need action.
